When I first created my website, I knew I needed more support and better name recognition than a free hosting service could provide. I investigated my options and selected to host http://stephanieallencrist.com/ with JustHost, because they had the support services I needed for a price I could afford.
Right from the start, I was overwhelmed by the dashboard. Before this, I’d built blogs using preconfigured templates. Those programs are designed to be used by people who don’t know what they’re doing, with advanced features for those who do. I was expecting something similar, especially after the JustHost sales pitch.
Instead, I discovered that I had to know more than I did to do anything at all. It was a very frustrating way to start. With a little coaching and a lot of time, I figured out how to make one of their programs do what I wanted. I built a static website that was basically a placeholder as I built up other elements of my writing platform.
The time came when I really needed to change my website. Unfortunately, they’d changed their programs! I tried to explore the new options to figure out which program I wanted to use, but the program deleted all my old content without warning. Now, I have to start from scratch!
I suppose I should be glad they’re keeping up with shifts in technology, but they really need to make their changes easier on their customers.
