I have been a customer of BlueHost for about 6 years. My site experiences decent traffic, ranging from a few hundred on weekdays to a few thousand on weekends when new games are released. I was attracted to BlueHost for two primary reasons. First, BlueHost has all the features I needed in shared hosting provider at a fantastic price. The second allure to BlueHost was their no-nonsense SSH access. Command line access to a site is incredibly useful and BlueHost provides a long leash to access the back-end of a server.
My experience with BlueHost’s customer support has been outstanding. I have called needing ports opened, configurations tweaked or other less-than-simple requests and the customer service techs did not miss a beat. They were knowledgeable, quick to respond and patient with all my requests.
The only issue I have had with BlueHost is their practice of ‘throttling’ servers. Twice every second BlueHost will see if your site is using more than 7% of the total server resources. Once flagged, your site moves to a single core with all other users who are ‘jailed’ or ‘throttled’. This process can severely limit your website speed and can quickly leave a bad taste in your visitor’s mouth. This is more than acceptable for the low price point. If your site experiences frequent throttling, it is a good indication you should upgrade your hosting plan, so once again the complaint must be taken with a grain of salt.
Rating: 4.5 BlueHost shared hosting delivers pretty excellent performance for their cost. There are negatives, but BlueHost is upfront about them and work for you as much as against.
